Midden

The Architecture of Minimalism

The shell grows only what is necessary. Every curve is load-bearing. Every void is structural.

Midden Radial — patelliform morphology read as structural web, matte graphite finish

Radial

The structural web — radial ribs opened into a pierced screen. For the wall that needs to feel held.

Square format · graphite shown

Midden Spiral — chambered logarithmic form as negative-space voids, white ground

Spiral

The chambered void — logarithmic geometry rendered as negative space. 410 × 160 mm.

Midden Helix — coiled shell extended into a vertical column of apertures, white ground

Helix

The vertical rhythm — coiled form elongated into a column of apertures for narrow piers.

In situ — two graphite forms on a narrow pier. Installed in series, the modules tessellate into a continuous membrane.

Description

Midden is minimalism as evolutionary necessity, not aesthetic choice. Conceived for walls that need structural presence without visual weight, each form introduces organic discipline into architectural space — the geometry of growth translated into rigorous relief.

A shell is the sole morphology in this taxonomy computed by an organism rather than drawn by hand — an organic architecture grown in calcium. The mollusc authored the algorithmic curve; the studio interrogates its structural mechanics, translating an organic calculation into a precise architectural grammar.

Three forms operate as the modular system: Radial, the patelliform morphology opened into a pierced structural web; Spiral, a sectioned chambered form whose logarithmic geometry renders negative-space voids that let the room breathe; Helix, a coiled shell extended into a vertical column of apertures for narrow piers. Each cast is a complete sculptural element that stands alone on a wall. Installed in series, the modules establish a continuous membrane — one form, repeated, until the wall itself becomes the work.

Process — The Grown Form

01 Sculpting

Hand-sculpting the shell morphology in clay — capturing the internal geometry rather than the external specimen.

02 Casting

Silicone negative taken; cast in exterior-grade water-based acrylic resin.

03 Patination

Hand-finishing the matte patina — graphite, white, or black ground.

04 Assembly

For the Helix form, finishing each shell fragment individually and assembling into the vertical column.

05 Mounting

Protective seal applied; rigged for wall installation — a single unit or tessellated.

Cast once. Finished once. Full process documentation is maintained in the studio archive.

The Beaufort Scales

The Beaufort Scales reads the wind through the water it shapes. Midden reads the shell through the structure it grows. Two translations of the same invisible law.

Acquisitions & Commissions

Midden is available for commission and acquisition — as a single sculptural accent or as a series that tessellates into a continuous membrane. Scale, patina, and form are determined by the space.
