Manta
The Planar Threshold
Hydrodynamic lift translated into a sweeping architectural plane — a two-metre wingspan that carries its own light.
Description
Suspended at a two-metre scale, Manta isolates the exact spatial coordinate where fluid resistance meets atmospheric volume — bridging the boundary between physical mass and weightless glide. It does not decorate a room; it transforms the void into an active threshold, introducing sweeping horizontal momentum that anchors everything beneath it.
Alongside Piscis Volans, Manta is one of only two complete organisms in The Crossing taxonomy. Mantas possess the largest brain-to-body mass ratio of any fish, exhibiting complex spatial awareness and active observation. Equipped with an open eye, the piece establishes a direct line of sight with the viewer — converting a passive void into an observing, reciprocal boundary.
The hollow resin body houses an integrated light armature that projects shifting, refracted illumination through its translucent white skin — internalizing the ocean’s caustic refractive index rather than merely reflecting the room. And unlike the cast series in the archive, Manta is hand-sculpted directly in Material One: every tool mark, plane change and surface compression is permanently preserved, rendering it an absolute unique.

Installation Context — Honeycomb House, Suiderstrand
Process — The Hand-Tooled Unique
The full creature sculpted in clay — wingspan held in the planar glide, open eye committed.
Hand-sculpted directly in water-based resin over the matrix — not cast. Every pass remains.
The integrated LED armature set within the hollow body — engineered to project refracted light.
White acrylic resin skin applied — the body becomes a plane that carries its own light.
Rigged for ceiling suspension — the planar vector hung at the threshold of the void.
Manta is an absolute unique — hand-sculpted in Material One rather than cast, so every tool mark, plane change and surface compression is permanently preserved. Full process documentation is maintained in the studio archive.
