Built on the dune.
The house stands on a fynbos dune near where two oceans meet, raised on timber posts so the dune beneath it can keep moving. Below lie stone fish traps attributed to Khoisan communities. With every dropping tide, they still hold fish.
II · VolumeExactly as large as it needs to be.
Nothing inside is surplus. The house is sized so the view and the wind fill the room, and not a centimetre more. Birch ply follows the roofline; a sheltered deck turns the house away from the wind and toward the view.
III · EnvelopeConcrete and sky.
The lower third is hexagonal glass-fibre reinforced concrete (GFRC), cast in the studio and weathered by the salt of this coast. It holds the timber to the ground and tracks the sun through the day. At night the large window frames the Southern Cross. With little light pollution, the Milky Way becomes part of the ceiling. The studio’s sculpture and finishes are built straight into the house.
